Geological History

ISLE OF THANET
The seaside town of Margate is part of the coastal district of the Isle of Thanet. Among the histories, myths and legends surrounding Thanet is the area’s geological past as an island. The region was previously separated by the Wantsum Channel, which dried up in the seventeenth century and became marshland, connecting the isle to the mainland. As sea levels continue to rise, there is a concrete possibility that the Isle of Thanet may, indeed, become an island again. The question is not if, but when.
